He specializes in complex litigation with an international dimension, investment arbitration and commercial arbitration.

Borja Álvarez has extensive experience assisting clients in high-profile cases related to the energy and construction sectors, as well as sports law disputes and cases arising from M&A transactions.

He has participated in international arbitration cases brought under investment protection treaties (the Energy Charter Treaty and other bilateral investment treaties), and in international commercial arbitration cases. He represents clients before ICSID, ICC, SCC, AAA, the Court of Arbitration of Madrid (CAM) and the International Arbitration Center of Madrid (CIAM), and in ad hoc UNCITRAL arbitrations. Besides, Borja regularly participates in proceedings to recognize and enforce international decisions, including enforcements of investment arbitration awards.

Between 2017 and 2018, he completed secondments at the New York offices of US law firms Hughes Hubbard & Reed and Alston & Bird. He is admitted to the New York State Bar (2018).

Borja is also co-chair of the Iberoamerican Arbitration Club (CEIA) under 40 group, CEIA -40, co-chair of the of the Spanish chapter of the New York State Bar Association or NYSBA (International Section), and member of the European Federation for Investment Law and Arbitration (EFILA).

He lectures on international arbitration in the Master in International and European Business Law at Universidad Pontificia de Comillas–ICADE in Madrid.

Borja speaks regularly at conferences on international arbitration and is the author of specialized publications on several topics of investment arbitration.
