Cuatrecasas strengthens its position in the Chinese legal sector by bringing Sandra Costas on board as the new director of the offices in China (Beijing and Shanghai), a leadership that she will exercise together with partners Omar Puertas and Pablo Cubel. Costas will be based at the Shanghai office, from where she will work in coordination with the Beijing office and the Asian Desk.

Having her on board will enable Cuatrecasas to strengthen both its offer of legal services and also its presence in such an open and competitive market as the Asian market, where the firm already has over 20 years of experience. Costas will be key in decision-making in two of the firm’s main international offices, advising and joining our clients in their transactions in Asia, Europe, Africa and Latin America.

Bachelor of Laws by the University of Santiago de Compostela, major in foreign trade management and administration, Costas has 20 years of experience as a corporate lawyer, developing her career most of that time based in Asia (Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong). Before joining Cuatrecasas, Costas worked in China with the law firm DLA Piper, and held other positions in various institutions in China such as the Commercial Section of the Spanish Embassy and the Spanish Chamber of Commerce.

She specializes in crossborder business transactions (direct investments, mergers and acquisitions, mixed companies, special vehicles and restructuring) and commercial transactions between Asia, Europe and the Americas, and she has represented clients in the financial, industrial and consumer goods sectors in their different investment stages and transactions. Member of the bar in Spain, Costas acts as secretary of the board of directors of several companies and regularly advises clients on corporate governance.

Speaking about her recent appointment, Sandra Costas says: "I am grateful for the trust that has been placed in me and proud to be part of an organization that places knowledge, innovation and people—its lawyers, clients and colleagues—at the center of all that it does.” She also adds: “I arrive at Cuatrecasas at a time when Asia in general and China in particular are reopening and on a strong recovery, which will result—inside and outside the region—in new investment and trade opportunities for clients and certainly new opportunities for Cuatrecasas as a law firm.”

According to Omar Puertas, co-managing partner of the Cuatrecasas offices in China and Litigation and International Arbitration partner, “Bringing Sandra on board shows the Cuatrecasas commitment to the Chinese market, and the Asian market in general, where we have built up a leading practice over 20 years.”
