Cuatrecasas incorporated SLCM - Serra Lopes, Cortes Martins on January 1, 2023, adding 43 people to the Cuatrecasas team in Portugal, where the Iberian-American firm now has more than 250 professionals. The incorporation was announced in October 2022 and was completed within the predicted timeframe.

A total of 36 lawyers (10 partners, 1 consultant, 8 senior associates, 12 associates and 4 trainees) joined the teams in corporate and M&A, banking & finance, real estate, litigation and arbitration, public, tax, labor, criminal law, and EU & competition law.

Luís Cortes Martins: Senior partner in Portugal and member of the firm’s global board of directors

With a 35-year career, he has extensive experience in national and international merger and acquisition transactions, specifically in the financial, energy, infrastructure, telecommunications and media, food, health, and real estate sectors. He is also well known for his vast experience in dispute resolution, whether arbitration or civil litigation, often working as an arbiter in civil and commercial disputes.

Miguel Pena Machete: Partner in the EU and Competition Law Practice

With a career of almost 30 years, he has extensive experience advising on competition and regulatory matters. He has been involved in preventive monitoring and in defending competition law infringement cases, as well as in substantial M&A transactions involving regulatory issues and in notifying mergers to the competition authority and the European Commission.

Maria Raquel Moreira: Partner in the Litigation and Arbitration Practice

During her 25-year career, she has accumulated extensive experience in civil, commercial and corporate litigation with clients from different business sectors, including financial and banking institutions, large companies and state-owned companies. She also provides legal advice on asset recovery and restructuring to distressed companies, as well as in non-judicial and judicial recovery and insolvency proceedings.

Rafael Lucas Pires: Partner in the Corporate and M&A Practice

For over 20 years, he has focused on mergers and acquisitions and capital markets - corporate divestitures and acquisitions, joint ventures and venture capital, and he has participated in numerous domestic and crossborder transactions, complex corporate restructurings, buyouts and takeover bids. He has extensive experience in private equity, capital markets, privatization and corporate transactions. He also works on corporate governance issues.

His career in law spans almost 30 years and his main focus is commercial law, corporate law, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate advisory. He is experienced in agency, distribution and franchising contracts and in corporate governance.

Inês Pinheiro: Partner in the Labor Practice

With a career of more than 30 years, she has extensive experience in providing legal advice to clients’ human resources management on restructuring and collective dismissal processes, labor audits, collective bargaining negotiations, and labor disputes.

Alexandra Martins: Partner in the Corporate and M&A Practice

She focuses on commercial and corporate law, mergers and acquisitions, contract law and corporate advisory. With extensive experience in national and international transactions and privatizations, she has been involved in some of the most substantial transactions negotiated in Portugal in recent years.

Diana Simão Lourenço: Partner in the Litigation and Arbitration Practice

She has worked on a wide range of litigation matters, focusing on civil and commercial litigation for clients from different sectors, such as financial and banking institutions, large national and multinational companies, state-owned companies in civil and commercial litigation, and individuals. She provides legal advice on matters related to distressed companies, asset recovery and restructuring.

António Gaspar Schwalbach: Partner in the Tax Practice

He provides legal advice on corporate restructuring transactions, M&A transactions, private wealth restructuring programs, and family wealth restructuring, as well as on investment operations in Portugal, and financial and commercial transactions. He also has extensive experience in all pre-litigation and litigation phases involving tax matters, including in the Court of Justice of the European Union.

Marisa Mirador: Partner in the Public Law Practice

Isabel Garcia: Tax consultant with a career spanning 35 years

She focuses on corporate and tax consulting. She has worked on significant tax litigation cases involving different taxes, including corporate income tax, personal income tax, VAT and sales taxes. She provides regular tax advice to companies, as well as transactional support.
