Cuatrecasas has appointed
Sergio Agüera as the partner in charge of its Corporate and M&A Practice on the Balearic Islands, which has been a strategic region for the firm for over 20 years. Agüera specializes in real estate and M&A transactions and in developing and implementing projects. With over two decades of proven experience, he joined the firm at the end of 2022 and now joins the team at the Palma de Mallorca office to drive and consolidate its Real Estate Practice, a task he will combine with his current duties at the Barcelona office.
“We know the Palma office has a lot of potential. With me assuming these new responsibilities, we want to give impetus to the corporate and real estate teams, and to the Cuatrecasas leadership position in the Balearic Islands. This island group’s economy, led by the hotel and tourism sector, is proving to be dynamic in recent years, and therefore, Cuatrecasas has decided to expand its Palma team and office where growth has been outstanding and consistent since its opening,” said Sergio Agüera regarding his new responsibilities at the firm.
Given the real estate sector’s constant development on the Balearic Islands, both in the private sector and in the hotel, restaurant and leisure sector, a group of lawyers specializing in corporate practice is required to enable the firm to continue to be a benchmark business law firm. Sergio Agüera has a team of seven lawyers, five of which are based at the Palma office and two—
Aina Maragall (Real Estate and Town Planning) and
Ane Ballano (M&A)—at the Barcelona office, who will have the support of the Tax Practice with partner Daniel Coloma at the helm. Meanwhile, Enrique Alvarez is leaving the firm to start other professional projects.
There is a team of 20 lawyers at the Palma office who actively participate in all the different stages of this type of transactions, ranging from capturing clients to designing the transactions covering all branches of law, implementation, final execution and any possible later adjustments. Grouped into perfectly coordinated multidisciplinary teams, the firm’s lawyers are experts in the specifics of each Balearic island.
On the Balearic Islands, Cuatrecasas offers a specialized service for complex matters in the islands’ most representative sectors: tourism, labor and employment, commerce, finance, real estate, and litigation and arbitration. It offers its clients highly qualified teams and, when the matters requires it, it also works with experts in other jurisdictions. By offering local and immediate advice of top quality, the firm aims to continue growing and to consolidate the trust of local and international clients, to promote corporate transactions and to become a benchmark law firm in corporate law. With the appointment of Agüera under its expansion process, the firm reinforces a practice that is at its peak on the islands, where it expects to inaugurate a new office building in September 2024 after it finishes the project to add a new story to its offices on Colón 9, Palma. The building, which has been renovated using a more modern design in line with the changes made at its offices in Valencia, Seville and Zaragoza, will be exclusively occupied by Cuatrecasas.
Javier Solá, managing director of the Palma office stated: “The hiring of Sergio Agüera as coordinating partner of the Corporate and M&A Practice in Palma is an important commitment by the firm to become the benchmark law firm for all types of corporate transactions, with a particular specialty in hotel real estate, as well as for private clients, all of which are transactions typical of the islands.”
