Mateo Verdías represents investors and sovereign states in commercial and investment arbitration proceedings, disputes relating to the mining, energy, oil & gas, and technology sectors, and disputes arising from M&A transactions.
He represents clients in proceedings before arbitration courts including ICSID, PCA, ICC, CCL (Peru), CCA (Uruguay), FAI (Finland), as well as in UNCITRAL ad hoc proceedings, participating in arbitrations started under the protection of commercial and investment contracts, as well as under multilateral and bilateral investment treaties.
He also advises foreign investors on structuring their investments to maximize their protection under investment treaties.
Before joining Cuatrecasas, he worked as an international associate at the New York office of US law firm Sullivan & Cromwell LLP. Previously, he worked as an intern at the the ICC’s International Court of Arbitration and at Dechert LLP in Paris, and as an associate in the litigation and arbitration team of a Latin American regional firm (Uruguay office).
Mateo has published two books on international arbitration (as co-author and editor) and regularly publishes articles in books and well-known international journals specializing in this field. In 2022, he won the Young ITA Writing Competition and Award (Institute of Transnational Arbitration).
He is qualified to practice law in Uruguay and is in the process of being admitted to the New York Bar Association.
