Cuatrecasas has advised Macquarie Asset Management on the acquisition of a stake in Mayakan Natural Gas Pipeline, which includes a partnership with Engie to carry out the construction of Cuxtal II expansion, a new pipeline of approximately 700 kilometers to be built parallel to the existing system (of approximately 800 kilometers) that will pass through the states of Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche and Yucatán.

This project is carried out under a 30-year contract with the Mexican Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), which enables the transportation of natural gas to the combined-cycle plants recently built by the CFE in the Yucatán Peninsula (Mérida IV and Valladolid).

This natural gas transportation project is one of the most important to be built in Mexico to accelerate the energy transition, and it aims to reduce carbon footprint by up to 7.4 million tons of CO2 equivalent per year. The signing of this strategic alliance between both organizations will strengthen the energy infrastructure in Mexico and provide safe and affordable energy to the region.

The Cuatrecasas team involved in this transaction was led by partners León López, Marco Antonio de la Peña and Santiago Ferrer, and formed by associates Rafael Rodríguez, Fernando Ruiz, Luis Fernando Díaz Simón, Mariana Padilla, Iván Esquivel and Ivana Muñiz, among others.
