The Madrid International Arbitration Center (CIAM-CIAR) issues its New Arbitration Rules for 2024 in another step towards the consolidation of Madrid as an international arbitration hub.

The CIAM-CIAR is a leading institution for the resolution of international disputes in Spain, created in 2020 from the merger of three main local arbitral institutions. It is specialized in administering international arbitration cases. In October 2023, CIAM-CIAR approved its new Arbitration Rules, which entered into force on 1 January 2024 (the New CIAM-CIAR Rules). The New CIAM-CIAR Rules introduce several innovations aimed at enhancing the effectiveness efficienc c and transparency of arbitration proceedings, in line with the best international practices and the needs of users of arbitration. The reform was driven by the CIAM-CIAR Best Practices Commission: presided by Alexis Mourre and including several prominent practitioners such as Filipa Cansado, Andrés Jana, Diana Correa, Sabina Sacco, and José Ricardo Feris.

This column provides a brief overview of some of the most significant changes introduced by the New CIAM-CIAR Rules.
