The revised Regulation on Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Chemicals enters into force

Regulation 1272/2008 on classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures ("CLP Regulation") requires manufacturers, importers or downstream users of substances or mixtures to classify, label and package their hazardous chemicals before placing them on the market.

On 10 December 2024, Regulation 2024/2865 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 October 2024 amending CLP Regulation entered into force.

The purpose of this revised CLP Regulation is to further protect EU workers, consumers and the environment from hazardous substances, mixtures and articles, and also to strengthen the internal market of chemicals to achieve a more competitive and sustainable chemical industry.

The main aspects of the revised CLP Regulation are the following:

• Labelling will be simpler. The introduction of digital labelling and the improvement of the legilibility of labels is foreseen in this new text.
• Websites of online stores will have to include hazardous properties clearly, with the purpose of protecting consumers. Likewise, advertisements and online offers will have to contain information on chemical hazards, which will facilitate informed choices by consumers and the development of a market for sustainable consumer chemical products.
• The clarity on the safe sale of household chemicals via the refill stations is highlighted. This will contribute to reducing packaging and packaging waste.
  

In conclusion, the revised CLP Regulation entails a greater protection of consumers and the environment by providing a more secure legal framework with more demanding information obligations for market players.
