Cuatrecasas Debate Tournament fosters essential skills for young lawyers’ professional development

SubscribeLast January, Campus Cuatrecasas launched the latest Interoffice Debate Tournament that, as part of the firm’s Mentor Plan and run exclusively for practical training purposes, is aimed at trainee lawyers and junior associates from all practice areas who joined in the last year, to improve their public speaking and argumentation skills.
The competition provides young lawyers with the opportunity to develop essential skills for contract negotiation and participation in court proceedings and arbitration—particularly the ability to speak in public, work as a team, analyze information and argue a case—putting the skills into practice in a competitive debate format. To this end, last April the participants took a speaking course with the trainer Sebastián Lora.
Organized into groups, the lawyers have faced each other in a competition that has developed in several debate rounds via Zoom since May. These rounds culminated on October 16 with the semifinals and final held in person at the Atzavara Hotel in Santa Susanna (Barcelona).
After following top-level debates by the 88 participants, a panel comprising lawyers Kai Fischer, Álvaro Mendiola and Meritxell Yus announced the winners of the 2024 edition: the team made up of Joan-Marc Barcón, Sheila Canudas and Laia Suñé, who faced the team of Joan Guasp and Alejandro Pomares in the final round.
As usual, the Debate Tournament’s semifinals were also keenly contested, with the participation of four teams, including lawyers Nicolas Angles, Mara Illinca, David López and Irati Martínez de Lagos Fernández.
